Soccer Fever!!
The Grade Ones began the second term with renewed energy and enthusiasm. We welcome Mrs Tessa Traynor, who is teaching in the Busy Bee class while Mrs Alexander is away on maternity leave. (Who incidentally gave birth to a beautiful baby daughter, Victoria)
We seized the day and began the term with a theme on Fossils and Early Man. The girls were fascinated to learn about man’s evolution from then to now, and how various discoveries and inventions changed our world forever.
We then moved on to Autumn as a theme, examining the phenomena of migration and hibernation in depth. ‘Hibernation Day’, where the girls dressed as hibernating animals, made dark shelters under their desks and ate nuts and seeds for the day, caused much excitement!
This term also saw the introduction of Netball in Grade One, which nearly all of the girls participated in. At the moment, positions in space and on a netball court have very little significance for them but the joy on their faces is evident as all 14 girls charge after the ball! As they say: “E glande quercus”. (From tiny acorns do mighty oak trees grow.)
Very soon now, we will finally embrace the mania that has gripped our country, and structure all our lessons and activities around the World Cup. If nothing else, it is a great opportunity to learn to count in 11’s!
