The second term is always a busy one for the Grade Two girls. They have started and are busy working on their very first project during class time. This year we decided to study the very exciting 2010 World Cup Soccer Tournament. The teams were chosen and the girls are now finding out about sports kits, players and venues. One lesson was spent locating the country of choice on a world map and learning about the various continents and oceans.
Our art this term will include some African themes as well as soccer fever projects. The girls have already completed beautiful African plates filled with bright, colourful designs resembling Ndebele paintings and beadwork. We intend to produce some new patterned soccer balls hopefully reminding us of the teams and their countries. A soccer mascot for each team should provide some scope for including either some fauna or flora from the countries.
We will learn to tell the time on an analogue clock this term and the girls will be thrilled to hear that they may wear watches when this has been achieved! Next term will provide time for much practice in consolidating this skill.
SALVAZIONESCHOOL
On Tuesday, 18 May an enthusiastic group of thirty-five Grade 2 girls left APPS to go and visit the Grade 2’s at the SalvazioneSchool. Each girl took a book to read and lunch to share. We all arrived and went straight to the Grade 2 classroom where we were met by Viola, the teacher. Both teacher and her pupils were very excited to see us.
We then went into their hall and each girl from APPS paired with a Salvazione pupil.Everyone introduced themselves and our girls read their book to their new friend. Some of the Salvazione children read with our girls and others listened intently to the tale.
We were interested to see the boys, being somewhat skeptical at first of the female invasion, becoming involved and loving the attention. Some of our girls expressed their amazement at how strict the teacher was and how well behaved the pupils were.
When everyone had read their book our girls shared their lunches with the Salvzione pupils.During this time the teachers and the moms who had kindly transported the girls had a delicious tea. After that we donated all the books to their school library and came back to APPS.
From all accounts the girls had a wonderful morning and thoroughly enjoyed seeing a school and pupils who are not as fortunate as they are.Salvazione asked us to return and spend more time with them.Mrs Nugent and Mrs Sale are thinking about the possibility of getting those pupils to visit our school later in the year.
Our grateful thanks go to the moms for lifting, the girls for donating books so generously and the Salvazione staff for making us so welcome and special.
