Grade 2N News
Grade 2N arrived back at school for Term 3A, post World Cup fever and managed to bring that excitement and sense of unity and pride in our country, into the classroom.  During the holidays, the girls kept track of their chosen team’s results and together with a partner, prepared a speech.

They are to be congratulated on presenting wonderful information ranging from famous people, inventors, artists, cultural food, dance and clothing.  The girls’ enthusiasm and special touches - humour, photographs, musci and food all added to a most enjoyable morning.

On 18 July, we celebrated Madiba’s 92nd birthday and his call to do something for the community, by making peanut butter sandwiches which were then wrapped up, with a chocolate placed on top.  Both Grade 2 classes walked down to Kingsway Avenue and we handed out the sandwiches to the road workers.  The girls were thrilled when the team leader stopped four lanes of traffic for us to cross the road safely!

It is important for children to be given opportunities to ‘make good’ and not to feel that their youth excludes them from being aware of other people and the trials and hardships that they face.  The response from the workers was most touching.  The traffic also got involved and people hooted and waved their support for our kind little angels.

On the way back to school, the girls picked up litter and again, a simple act of awareness and taking responsibility for their environment hopefully empowered them to realise that even the smallest of acts can make a difference.

The class also presented their annual assembly play which focused on an adapted version of ‘Twelve Angry Men’ and was called ‘17 Aucky Porky Piggies/Jury’.  The ‘jury’ are called in to decide whether or not the Big Bad Wolf was guilty of destroying the Three Little Piggies’ homes.  The moral of the story was that we should try not to make judgments based on our prejudices and assumptions because, in this case, the poor wolf had asthma and hence accidentally blew the houses down.  In the words of the song, ‘don’t think a wolf is always bad, it would just be so sad!’

We have concentrated on numeracy, telling the time, reading, writing, speaking and spelling skills.  The girls accepted the challenge of learning all their spelling lists from the beginning of the year for the annual Spelling Bonanza.

The theme for this term is the tales of Beatrix Potter which the girls are thoroughly enjoying, as well as learning about her young life and ultimate establishment of the British National Trust.

Grade 2N has enjoyed a varied learning experience this term and I am most proud of them.
