Dear Parents

Welcome back after our shorter than usual break!  We are all having to keep our wits about us in this different year.  I urge both girls and parents to keep updated on calendarised events in order to avoid clashes!

APPS Staff
We welcome back Mrs Tessa Traynor who is teaching for Mrs Alexander whilst she is on maternity leave and Mrs Ally du Plooy who has joined us in Grade 5.  Mrs du Plooy will also work with our girls on the sports field.  We trust that both ladies feel that they have been warmly welcomed and will thoroughly enjoy their time with us.

Grade 6 and 7 Leadership
Congratulations to the following girls in Grade 6:  Bella Polkinghorne – Class Captain; Liezl Kritzinger – Vice Class Captain; Caitlin van der Merwe – Captain of St Patrick; Anne Spring – Captain of St Andrew and Georgina Kiezer – Captain of St George.  In Grade 7, congratulations go to Naseerah Laher who is Head Girl this term and Melissa Mushonga who is Deputy Head.

Wits’ Students
Once again, we have taken on students from the Wits School of Education and we welcome Mrs Michelle Werner and Miss Aamena Mahomed while they undertake the teaching experience side of their studies.  Both students are in their third year and will be working with Mrs Hindley and Mrs Becks at the Grade 4 level.

Reports and Parent Interviews
Reports and fee accounts will be sent home on Friday 23 April.  Parent interview sheets are up on your daughter’s classroom door, please book a suitable time to see her class teacher.  A notice will follow regarding parent interviews together with information on appointments with specialist teachers.

Alice in Wonderland
The Grade 7 girls are already hard at work preparing for the annual Grade 4 to 7 play.  The theme sounds wonderfully exciting and, although a lot of hard work will need to be put in between now and 24 May, we hope that everyone learns and gains from this valuable experience.

Security
Please ensure that security measures put in place for the protection of your daughters are adhered to, for example, displaying your APPS security tag to the guard at the gate and reinforcing to your daughters that they may not wait by the gate, under the archway or in the front courtyard to be collected after school and extra murals.  Please also see the information under "Safety and Security" in this newsletter, the points of which were kindly brought to our attention by Mkhululi Moyo, one of our security guards.

Measles Vaccinations
The Department of Health is continuing its vaccination programme into 2010 as there was an increase in the number of measles cases over the 2009/2010 period.  If your daughter was not vaccinated last year and should you wish her to be part of the 2010 campaign, please consult your doctor or nearest clinic.

Best wishes for a successful term.
